Smbataberd
Smbataberd Fortress is located east of the village of Artabuynk in Vayots Dzor. Built in the 5th century and reinforced in the 10th-14th centuries, Smbataberd is mentioned by Strabo under the name 'Symbace,' meaning 'Smbat's place.' This indicates that Smbataberd likely existed before the 5th century, when Armenia was under Roman rule. The fortress is situated at an altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level; its walls are 3 meters thick, and it is equipped with towers and embrasures. Smbataberd protected the borders of Syunik from invasions.
